After a week's delay due to rain, the Bashers were prepared to finish off the season against Hot Action. However, due to circumstances beyond their control Hot Action had to forfeit the doubleheader. It was the Bashers' second double-header win due to forfeit.
The Bashers finished their first season at the "C" level with a record of 12-6-0. It was a productive campaign for what was often a makeshift lineup for the team.
They will return in the spring of 2007 for more exciting Arlington softball action.

Bashers Show Heart to Clinch Winning Record
They say it's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog. The Bashers proved that this cliche applies to softball as well. Despite being two men short, the boys in orange were able to split a double-header against the first-place Hard Times Cafe by taking the opener 16-15 and losing the second game 31-9.
With only eight men at Virginia Highlands at the time of first pitch, coach Mark made a surprise decision to start Kevin on the mound, his first start in 15 years. The Bashers would get on the board in the top of the first. After back-to-back leadoff singles by Dave and Dean, Glen drove home the first run with a ground out. With two outs, Pat would single and Marty would walk. Kevin would help his own cause with a bases-clearing double. Mark would then walk, and Dave would drive home Kevin to make it 5-0 after a half inning. Kevin would hold Hard Times Cafe to three in the bottom of the inning to keep his side two runs to the good after an inning.
In the top of the second, the Bashers would put up four more runs. Glen and Matt had singles to start off the inning, while Pat would reach on a fielder's choice that eliminated Matt. With one out, Marty hit an RBI double, followed by Kevin's RBI groundout. Mark would drive home Marty with a single. Dave would hit another single and Dean would drive home Mark with a single as well. Kevin would struggle in the bottom of the frame, giving up nine runs, leaving the score at 12-9 after two.
In the top of the third, the Bashers would take the lead for good. Matt led off with a double, which Pat would follow with a double. Marty then had an RBI single, and Kevin would drive in two with a single of his own. Mark would get a single. With one out, Dean and Glen would hit back-t0-back RBI singles. With two outs, Pat would hit a double to drive home two runs, but was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a triple. With the lead, Kevin gave way to Dave on the mound. Dave would pitch a donut in the third, and the Bashers led 16-12 after 3.
The Bashers were held scoreless in the fourth, and the while Hard Times Cafe would score three in the bottom of the inning, the Bashers held the line and came up with an inspiring, underdog victory by the mark of 16-15.
After pouring it all into game one, the Bashers were unable to overcome the manpower disadvantage in game 2. The Bashers spotted their opponents seven in the top of the first, but did manager to score nine times themselves. Dave, Dean, Glen and Kevin each had RBI singles, while Pat had a pair of RBI singles and Matt had a one-run and two-run single. However, that would be the only offense the Bashers would muster, as Hard Times Cafe ended the game with 31 runs.
The Bashers clinched a winning season with their win in the first game, and now stand at 10 up and 6 down. The finale of a successful fall campaign occurs on Wednesday, October 18th at Jennie Dean against Hot Action. For the field location, see the links section.

Bashers win by forfeit
The Bashers arrived on a warm Wednesday evening at Virginia Highlands ready to play softball. Unfortunately, their opponents, Vanilla Shaft, arrived ready to knock back a few cold ones. This led to a double forfeit for violating league rules by Vanilla Shaft, giving the Bashers a sweep of the doubleheader.
Game one began well for the boys in orange. Consecutive singles by Dave and Dean allowed Glen to drive home the first run of the game with a single to right. Marty also brought home a run with a one-out single, and the Bashers led 2-0 after a half-inning. They conceded 3 in the bottom of the inning, but managed to regain the lead in the top of the second. With two outs and one on, Dean smoked a line-drive over the head of the left fielder and managed an inside-the-park home run, his first as a Basher. However, the 4-3 lead was short-lived, as Vanilla Shaft put up 2 of their own in the bottom of the second to hold a 5-4 advantage after 2.
In the top of the third, the Bashers pushed another run across when an infield single by Kevin scored Allan and tied the game at 5. After a scoreless bottom of the third, the Bashers would put up 4 in the top of the frame, sparked by a three-run home run to right field by Glen, his second of the fall 2006 season. The Bashers got another run when Matt doubled and scored on Marty's single. The Bashers had a 9-5 lead after 3 and a half innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Vanilla Shaft put up 2 runs to make it 9-7 before their stash of beer was discovered, leaving the umpire with no choice but to award the Bashers a double forfeit win. The Bashers attempted to waive the forfeit, but unfortunately that is not permissible.
"There's no 'i' in knucklehead, but there is a 'u'," coach/catcher Mark said.
The Bashers are back in action on Wednesday, October 11th against Hard Times Cafe, who sit in first place in the league entering play this past week. The game is at Virginia Highlands at 6pm. Bashers Split With Whitlow's
The Bashers split their doubleheader on Wednesday night, riding a wave of hitting to a 19-8 win in the opener against Whitlow's on Wilson, but dropping the nightcap due to a 7th inning rally, 14-13.
The night opened poorly for the boys in orange, as they spotted their opponents a 6-0 lead after half an inning. The Bashers replied with 5 of their own in the bottom of the inning as they sent 10 of their 11 hitters to the plate. In the second, Whitlow's added to their lead and made it an 8-5 game. However, the Bashers would tie the ballgame up when Tommy hit a three-run home run to left-center. It was the first home run of the year for the team.
The Bashers defense would be the story the rest of the way. They held Whitlows without a run for the rest of the game. The Bashers got two in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good courtesy of an RBI double from Tommy and a sacrifice fly by Glen.
In the bottom of the fifth the Bashers put it away. They sent 10 to the plate for the second time in the game, scoring 9 before the game was called on mercy-rule. Brian had a 2-run single, as did Kevin. Tommy had an RBI single, and then Glen hit a three-run inside-the-park home run to invoke the slaughter rule.
The Bashers did find things tougher in the late game. The Bashers did get on the board in the top of the first courtesy of Tommy's two-run home run to left-center, his second in as many games. Whitlow's would take the advantage right away with a 3-run inning. After a scoreless second, the Bashers regained the advantage in the top of the third. Matt had a three-run double and scored on Marty's RBI single as the boys in orange went up 6-3. However, a 5-run bottom of the third made it 8-6 in favor of Whitlows.
In the top of the fourth, the lead again went to the Bashers. Dean drove home 2 with an RBI double and scored when Tommy had an RBI single. After holding Whitlow's scoreless in the bottom of the frame, the Bashers added one more in the top of inning on Kevin's RBI single. However, Whitlow's would get 3 in the bottom of the fifth and another in the bottom of the 6th and held a 12-10 lead going into the final inning.
The Bashers looked to continue their late-inning heroics, and it appeared history would repeat itself yet again. Tommy and Glen led off with back-to-back singles, with Matt then adding an RBI single the mix. Marty would drive home a run with a single of his own to tie it, and Alan would give his team a 13-12 lead with a sacrifice fly. However, Whitlow's did its best 1999 Atlanta Braves NLCS impersonation in the bottom of the frame. With the game tied, the bases were loaded with two outs after a contraversial call at second base. With a full count, Whitlows came up with a game-winning single to salvage a split of the doubleheader.

The Bashers moved to 7-5 on the season with the results, and will play on Wednesday, October 4th against Vanilla Shaft. Gametime is 8pm at Virginia Highlands, close to the Pentagon City Metro. For directions, see the "Links" section.

Bashers Dominate, Sweep Upper Deckers 25-4, 17-5
The Bashers lived up to their name on Wednesday night as they decimated the Upper Deckers, sweeping both games of the doubleheader.
The Bashers used two big innings to dominate the Upper Deckers in game 1 by a final of 25-4. After only sending 3 men to the plate in the first, the team responded by putting up 16 in the second inning. They brought home 11 runs in the inning to gain an 11-0 lead after an inning and a half. While the home team countered with 3 runs in the bottom of the second, the Bashers would outdo their second inning offensive display in the top of the third. The team sent an incredible 19 to the plate in the frame, and scored another 14 runs. Each team member scored at least one run in the frame. The Upper Deckers could only manage a run in the bottom of the third, and the game was ended after three innings due to the mercy rule.
In the nightcap the Bashers spotted the Upper Deckers a 3-0 lead after half an inning. The Bashers would tie it in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Dean and Glen would each get singles, sandwiched around a walk to Pat. Matt would hit a sacrifice fly, and Tommy and Marty would follow with back-to-back, 2 out, RBI singles. After holding the line on defense, the Bashers gained their first lead of the game in the bottom of the second. Kevin and Mark would record back-to-back singles. Dave hit into a double-play, but Kevin scored from second to make it 4-3.
After the Upper Deckers tied it in the top of the third, the Bashers had another big inning. They sent 11 batters to the plate and scored 7 times to put the game out of reach. All the runs scored with 2 outs in the inning. After giving up a run to make it 11-5 after three and a half, the Bashers would score twice more in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an RBI double by Tommy to score Glen, and then an RBI ground-out by Marty to bring home Tommy.
With a shut-out inning in the top of the fifth, the Bashers closed out the game at bat. Pat would drive home Dave with a one-out single, and then Tommy, with the bases loaded, hit a triple to plate Dean, Pat and Glen. At that point, the mercy rule was enforced for the second time on the night.

Bashers battle to split doubleheader
The Bashers continued their tradition of fighting to the very end on Wednesday night against the Fighting Penguins. A last-inning rally led the Bashers to win the opener 13-12, but their comeback fell short in the nightcap, 8-6.
In the opener, the Bashers failed to score in the first two innings. Facing a 3-0 deficit going into the bottom of the third, the Basher bats finally woke up. 9 batters came to the plate in the inning, with 5 runs coming home. Dean had an RBI single to score Yier, Glen had a 2-run, bases loaded double with another run scoring when Glen was picked off of second base, and Tommy finished the scoring with an RBI single to bring home Matt.
After a scoreless fourth, the Bashers relinquished the lead again in the top of the fifth by allowing 4 runs. However, the Bashers rallied for a second time, scoring twice on a 2-run single by Glen to tie the ballgame at 7. Things looked bleak for the Bashers, as they let up 5 runs in the top of the 6th. However, the Fighting Penguins could not fight off another Bashers comeback. 9 batters came to the plate, and all reached base safely. Marty led off with a single, followed by back-to-back walks to Kevin and Mark. Yier came up with an RBI single to bring home Marty, and Dave followed with an RBI walk to score Kevin. Dean lined an 2-run single, and Pat walked to once again load the bases. Glen then came up with an RBI single to tie the game, giving him 5 RBIs in the opener. Matt then lined a single to deep left-center against a drawn-in infield and outfield to score Dean with the game-winning run and give the Bashers their second consecutive last at-bat win.
The nightcap was a chippy game between the Penguins and Bashers, with both teams refusing to give in. The Bashers scored twice in the top of the first courtesy of an RBI single by Tommy to score Dean while Glen scored on an overthrow on the play. However, the Bashers gave the lead right to the Penguins, who scored 3 in each of their first 2 at-bats. Down 6-2 in the top of the third, the Bashers got 2 more runs. Pat scored on an RBI single by Marty, while Kevin drove in Tommy with an RBI single of his own. However, another 2 runs by the Penguins in the bottom of the third made it 8-4 for the home team.
The Bashers got another run in the top of the fourth. Dave scored on a sacrifice fly by Pat. The Bashers got one run closer in the top of the fifth. Tommy hit a one-out triple and came home on Marty's sacrifice fly. In the top of the sixth, with the score 8-6, the Bashers got a two-out single from Dean, followed by a walk to Pat, but were unable to rally again as the Penguins escaped a sweep at the hands of the Bashers.
The Bashers stayed at .500 for the season, sitting at 4-4-0. They are next in action on September 20th against the Upper Deckers. The game will be at Jennie Dean (see the links section for location) with first pitch slated for 8:30pm. So come out and support your Bashers.

Bashers show power, patience in sweep of Bad News Beers
The Bashers (3-3) swept their first "C" league doubleheader on Wednesday night, beating the Bad News Beers 16-10 in the opening game and 14-13 in the nightcap.
In game one, the Bashers shows the depth of their line-up. 10 of the 11 reached base at least one time, 8 men scored at least once, and 9 drove in at least one run. The Bashers got on the board first with three runs, courtesy of consecutive RBI singles by Matt, Dean and Pat. In the second, Glen had a two-run double while Matt followed up with an RBI single to give the Bashers 6-2 lead after an inning and a half. In the top of the third, Wes had an RBI single to drive in Pat and extend the Basher advantage to 7-3. The big inning came in the fourth. The Bashers sent 14 men to the plate, scoring 8 runs, highlighted by Glen's 2-run bases-loaded double. The Bashers added a run in the top of the fifth on Pat's sacrifice fly. The orange and black withstood a late Bad News Beer's rally to cap off a 16-10 victory.
Game two was a rocky ride for the Bashers. They fell behind 2-0 before they had even come to the plate, but scored four in the bottom of the first on RBI doubles by Chris, Matt and Dean and an RBI single by Pat. The Bashers added a run in the bottom of the second on Chris' RBI single. However, that 5-2 lead was short-lived. The Bad News Beers batted around in the top of the third and scored 8 runs to retake the lead. The Bashers chipped away at the lead thanks to an RBI single from Marty and a sacrifice by Allan. Meanwhile, the visitors added 1 in the top of the fourth and 2 in the top of the fifth to take a 13-7 lead. However, all hope was not lost in the Basher dugout. The team dug deep, and showed the patience of the champion. The Bashers walked 9 times in the inning. Kevin, Mark and Dave all had bases loaded walks to bring home the first three runs and cut the lead to 13-10. Chris then hit a two-run single to bring the Bashers within 1 and put runners on the corners for the heart of the line-up. The Bad News Beers pitcher, however, still struggled with control. He walked Glen to load the bases again, and then delivered full-count walks to Matt to tie the game, and Dean to win it.
The Bashers now sit at 3-3-0 on the season. They are next in action on September 13th at Virginia Highlands, Field 4, at 8pm against the Fighting Penguins. Virginia Highlands is located at 1600 S Hayes St in Pentagon City and the Pentagon Row complex. For location, please click here.

Bashers celebrate softball championship
The Bashers put the bats down and picked up the beers on Saturday afternoon as they toasted their spring 2006 championship in style. Many of the core players of the team, and their significant others, showed up to put a fitting end on the 2006 season. Old Danny hosted the soiree, and showed he is not only talented on the mound but also at the grill. It is safe to say that a good time was had by all.
The Bashers plan to play in the Fall 2006 season, which begins the last week of August. More details on days and times will be forthcoming in the near future. In addition, pictures from the championship tournament will be placed online in the coming weeks.

Bashers Roll to Title
For the first time in their 13 year existance, the Bashers can call themselves the cream of the crop. On Saturday, June 24 the Bashers completed their run to the title by winning both the winner's bracket final and the championship game for the Arlington County Men's "D" League.
WINNER'S BRACKET FINAL
BASHERS 14 LAST CALL 10
Under cloudy skies the second-seeded Bashers and fourth-place Last Call met to determine the first team in Saturday's championship game. Last Call opened the scoring by putting up 3 runs in the top of the first. However, the Bashers responded in kind, and then some. The Bashers sent 16 batters to the plate in their half of the first, scoring 11 times.
Last Call refused to go away quietly, and posted a five-run second to cut the Basher advantage to 3. With the Bashers unable to score in the bottom of the second, Last Call had an opportunity to retake control of the game. However, "Old" Danny was able to retire them in order in the top of the third, a half-inning that marked a turning point in the contest. The Bashers would use their half of the third to put up an additional 3 runs, including a tape-measure solo home run by Tab, to extend the lead to 14-8. While the Bashers would not score again, Last Call was able to only score two more runs themselves as the Bashers defense stepped up.
"Old" Danny was able to get his second win of the tournament, as the Bashers advanced to the championship game for the second consecutive season.
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
BASHERS 18 MCG CAPITAL 12
The tournament came down to the top two teams during the season, with the top seeded MCG Capital (14-2-2) taking on the second seed, the Bashers (14-3-1). The Bashers had to make due without several regular players, including Marty, Adam, Miguel and, for most of the contest, Dave. However, they were able to find a way to finish the season on a positive note anyways.
For the first time in the tournament, the Bashers batted first. They made the most out of their opportunity. The Bashers put up five runs in the opening frame, including Chris' three-run home run to left. The Basher defense held MCG to a single run in the bottom of the first to lead 5-1 after 1.
In the second, both teams added a single run to the scoresheet. The Bashers put up another in the top of the third to take a 7-2 lead. However, MCG's bats got rolling in the third. They added four to their tally and cut the deficit to a single run. In the top of the fourth, Glen hit a long home run down the right-field line to extend the Basher advantage to 9-6. However, MCG continued their hot hitting into their half of the fifth, taking their first and only lead of the contest. The regular season champions put up 6 runs in the inning, taking a 12-9 advantage after 4.
It is often said that championship teams know how to respond to adversity. Facing their first deficit deep in a ballgame in the entire tournament, the Bashers came out in the top of the fifth and did what needed to be done to take home their first title. The Bashers sent all 10 hitters to the plate, scoring 6 times to retake control of the game and a 15-12 advantage. In the bottom of the fifth the Basher defense came through and posted a three-up, three-down frame. The Bashers looked for insurance in the top of the sixth, and they got it with a three-run frame and an 18-12 lead.
As the Bashers took the field for the bottom of sixth, they stood just three outs away from glory. The first pitch was roped towards third, but Allan was there and came up with a sensational grab on the line-drive. The second batter hit a bullet towards short, but Chris was able to snag it out of the air for the second out of the inning. With a 2-1 count, the third batter for MCG hit a looping short fly ball to left. He expected to reach base and keep the game alive. However, Glen made a great break on the ball, reached in front of himself, and made the catch to give the Bashers the 2006 championship.
The win went to "Old" Danny, who ended up 3-0 in the tournament.
The Bashers ended the season with a final record 18-3-1. Pictures from the playoffs will be posted shortly.
The Bashers plan to return to the field in the fall. Rumors continue to swirl as to the level at which the team will compete. No comment was available after the game from any of the Bashers.

Bashers Advance to Finals of Winners Bracket
The Bashers swept their two games on Wednesday night, and the second seed has advanced to the finals of the winners bracket on Saturday.
GAME 1: BASHERS 16, CHICO'S BAIL BONDS 13
The Bashers and Chico's Bail Bonds battled for a third consecutive game in the opening round of the Arlington County Wednesday D League championship. After 23-4 and 14-1 losses the previous week, Chico's came out of the gate hitting, putting up a 3-0 lead before the Bashers came to bat. However, the home side batted through in the bottom of the first, sparked my Matt's monsterous 3-run home run to left-field. In all, the Bashers put up 6 in their half of the first.
However, the lead was short-lived as Chico's continued to hit starter "Old" Danny hard. A four-run second made the score 7-6 in favor of the visitors after an inning and a half. Adam led off the bottom on the second with a triple, and was brought home on Dave's sacrifice fly to make it 7-7 after two frames.
After a scoreless third, Chico's put up 2 in the top of fourth. However, the Bashers would put themselves out in front for good in the bottom of the frame, putting up 4 runs. Chico's would cut the lead to 11-10 after 4 1/2 innings, but in the bottom of the fifth the Bashers sent 9 to the plate, scored 5 runs and led 16-10. A Chico's 6th inning rally fell 3 runs short, and the Bashers pulled off the 16-13 win.
"Old" Danny pulled out the win with four innings of strong pitching, while Miguel came on for the two-inning save.
GAME 2: BASHERS 11 SPARTANS 10
On the back of their upset of third-seeded Badabing, the sixth-seeded Spartans looked for a second consecutive upset over the Bashers. The Spartans had history on their side, being the only team this season to beat a full-strength Basher team. Things look good for the lower seed, as they put up five runs in their half of the first inning. The Bashers managed two in their half of the first on a two-run home run by Chris. The score remained 5-2 until the bottom of the third, when the Bashers lived up to their name. The team sent 10 to the plate in the inning, scoring seven times to gain the 9-5 advantage. The Spartans cut it to 9-8 in the top of the fourth, but the Bashers would extend the lead by two in the bottom on the inning. The Bashers would extend the lead to 12-8 in their half of the fifth. The Spartans had one more rally left, and scored three in the top of the 6th to cut the Bashers advantage to a single run. However, time ran out on the upset-minded Spartans, as the Bashers' at bat in the bottom of the sixth used up the remaining two minutes on the clock.
Miguel picked up the win for the Bashers, going the distance.
UPCOMING GAMES
The Bashers (2-0) remain the highest seeded team left in the tournament, thanks to fourth-seeded Last Call's (2-0) upset of the top seed, MCG Capital (1-1). Last Call and the Bashers will battle in the finals of the winner's bracket at 11am on Saturday at Quincy Park. The winner advances to the championship game at 2pm, while the loser will play in the loser bracket's final at 1pm. The team that emerges unscathed from the winner's bracket will have to be beaten twice in the championship round in order to lose the title, but will only need to win once.

Bashers History
The Spring 2005 Bashers were the first team to take home a trophy since the 1998 squad, placing 2nd in both the regular season and tournament. They took Consolidated Construction to the wall, beating them soundly in the first of two elimination games, but falling short in the second. The Bashers, playing in their fourth game of the day, were unable to finish off Consolidated, who were playing for the second time.
A HISTORY LESSON...
Back in the days before we were a mens' league team (powerhouse, sez Kevin S) we were a co-ed team in Alexandria. We always went 6-1 in the fall, and instead of setting the league record for walks, our fearful leader was leading the league in...ejections!
Here are a couple of shots from those (best) forgotten days...
Where on earth did you get those stylin' shoes and WHITE (?) socks? And why is the catcher playing second base? And whose hair is that?
What, he swung? Why? Where is the ball? What is happening here?
