Bashers battle to split doubleheader

The Bashers continued their tradition of fighting to the very end on Wednesday night against the Fighting Penguins. A last-inning rally led the Bashers to win the opener 13-12, but their comeback fell short in the nightcap, 8-6.

In the opener, the Bashers failed to score in the first two innings. Facing a 3-0 deficit going into the bottom of the third, the Basher bats finally woke up. 9 batters came to the plate in the inning, with 5 runs coming home. Dean had an RBI single to score Yier, Glen had a 2-run, bases loaded double with another run scoring when Glen was picked off of second base, and Tommy finished the scoring with an RBI single to bring home Matt.

After a scoreless fourth, the Bashers relinquished the lead again in the top of the fifth by allowing 4 runs. However, the Bashers rallied for a second time, scoring twice on a 2-run single by Glen to tie the ballgame at 7. Things looked bleak for the Bashers, as they let up 5 runs in the top of the 6th. However, the Fighting Penguins could not fight off another Bashers comeback. 9 batters came to the plate, and all reached base safely. Marty led off with a single, followed by back-to-back walks to Kevin and Mark. Yier came up with an RBI single to bring home Marty, and Dave followed with an RBI walk to score Kevin. Dean lined an 2-run single, and Pat walked to once again load the bases. Glen then came up with an RBI single to tie the game, giving him 5 RBIs in the opener. Matt then lined a single to deep left-center against a drawn-in infield and outfield to score Dean with the game-winning run and give the Bashers their second consecutive last at-bat win.

The nightcap was a chippy game between the Penguins and Bashers, with both teams refusing to give in. The Bashers scored twice in the top of the first courtesy of an RBI single by Tommy to score Dean while Glen scored on an overthrow on the play. However, the Bashers gave the lead right to the Penguins, who scored 3 in each of their first 2 at-bats. Down 6-2 in the top of the third, the Bashers got 2 more runs. Pat scored on an RBI single by Marty, while Kevin drove in Tommy with an RBI single of his own. However, another 2 runs by the Penguins in the bottom of the third made it 8-4 for the home team.

The Bashers got another run in the top of the fourth. Dave scored on a sacrifice fly by Pat. The Bashers got one run closer in the top of the fifth. Tommy hit a one-out triple and came home on Marty's sacrifice fly. In the top of the sixth, with the score 8-6, the Bashers got a two-out single from Dean, followed by a walk to Pat, but were unable to rally again as the Penguins escaped a sweep at the hands of the Bashers.

The Bashers stayed at .500 for the season, sitting at 4-4-0. They are next in action on September 20th against the Upper Deckers. The game will be at Jennie Dean (see the links section for location) with first pitch slated for 8:30pm. So come out and support your Bashers.
