The Bashers (3-3) swept their first "C" league doubleheader on Wednesday night, beating the Bad News Beers 16-10 in the opening game and 14-13 in the nightcap.
In game one, the Bashers shows the depth of their line-up. 10 of the 11 reached base at least one time, 8 men scored at least once, and 9 drove in at least one run. The Bashers got on the board first with three runs, courtesy of consecutive RBI singles by Matt, Dean and Pat. In the second, Glen had a two-run double while Matt followed up with an RBI single to give the Bashers 6-2 lead after an inning and a half. In the top of the third, Wes had an RBI single to drive in Pat and extend the Basher advantage to 7-3. The big inning came in the fourth. The Bashers sent 14 men to the plate, scoring 8 runs, highlighted by Glen's 2-run bases-loaded double. The Bashers added a run in the top of the fifth on Pat's sacrifice fly. The orange and black withstood a late Bad News Beer's rally to cap off a 16-10 victory.
Game two was a rocky ride for the Bashers. They fell behind 2-0 before they had even come to the plate, but scored four in the bottom of the first on RBI doubles by Chris, Matt and Dean and an RBI single by Pat. The Bashers added a run in the bottom of the second on Chris' RBI single. However, that 5-2 lead was short-lived. The Bad News Beers batted around in the top of the third and scored 8 runs to retake the lead. The Bashers chipped away at the lead thanks to an RBI single from Marty and a sacrifice by Allan. Meanwhile, the visitors added 1 in the top of the fourth and 2 in the top of the fifth to take a 13-7 lead. However, all hope was not lost in the Basher dugout. The team dug deep, and showed the patience of the champion. The Bashers walked 9 times in the inning. Kevin, Mark and Dave all had bases loaded walks to bring home the first three runs and cut the lead to 13-10. Chris then hit a two-run single to bring the Bashers within 1 and put runners on the corners for the heart of the line-up. The Bad News Beers pitcher, however, still struggled with control. He walked Glen to load the bases again, and then delivered full-count walks to Matt to tie the game, and Dean to win it.
The Bashers now sit at 3-3-0 on the season. They are next in action on September 13th at Virginia Highlands, Field 4, at 8pm against the Fighting Penguins. Virginia Highlands is located at 1600 S Hayes St in Pentagon City and the Pentagon Row complex. For location, please click here.
