Bashers win by forfeit

The Bashers arrived on a warm Wednesday evening at Virginia Highlands ready to play softball. Unfortunately, their opponents, Vanilla Shaft, arrived ready to knock back a few cold ones. This led to a double forfeit for violating league rules by Vanilla Shaft, giving the Bashers a sweep of the doubleheader.

Game one began well for the boys in orange. Consecutive singles by Dave and Dean allowed Glen to drive home the first run of the game with a single to right. Marty also brought home a run with a one-out single, and the Bashers led 2-0 after a half-inning. They conceded 3 in the bottom of the inning, but managed to regain the lead in the top of the second. With two outs and one on, Dean smoked a line-drive over the head of the left fielder and managed an inside-the-park home run, his first as a Basher. However, the 4-3 lead was short-lived, as Vanilla Shaft put up 2 of their own in the bottom of the second to hold a 5-4 advantage after 2.

In the top of the third, the Bashers pushed another run across when an infield single by Kevin scored Allan and tied the game at 5. After a scoreless bottom of the third, the Bashers would put up 4 in the top of the frame, sparked by a three-run home run to right field by Glen, his second of the fall 2006 season. The Bashers got another run when Matt doubled and scored on Marty's single. The Bashers had a 9-5 lead after 3 and a half innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Vanilla Shaft put up 2 runs to make it 9-7 before their stash of beer was discovered, leaving the umpire with no choice but to award the Bashers a double forfeit win. The Bashers attempted to waive the forfeit, but unfortunately that is not permissible.

"There's no 'i' in knucklehead, but there is a 'u'," coach/catcher Mark said.

The Bashers are back in action on Wednesday, October 11th against Hard Times Cafe, who sit in first place in the league entering play this past week. The game is at Virginia Highlands at 6pm. For directions, please see the links section. Also, remember the field is Metro-accessible via the Pentagon City station.
