Bashers wrap up successful Fall 2007 campaign

The Bashers had a very successful Fall 2007 season. Despite injuries and the loss of a beloved teammate, the squad ended up with 13-5-0 record and a second-place finish, matching the best in team history.

During the season, the Bashers had several injuries that cost them important players. Marty missed all but the opening week, Mark missed 6 games with a variety of injuries, and Kevin missed the final 6 games with a broken right thumb. The team also missed players during the season due to a variety of reasons, and only 6 Bashers (Matt, Ryan, Tab, Chris E., Chris J. and Dave) did not miss a single week. Given the lack of continuity in the lineup and the field, the Bashers managed to keep the ship straight.

The season started off with a rainout the opening week. The delayed opening day brought a series with the Spartans. The Bashers won 15-12 in the opener, but dropped an 11-10 heartbreaking decision in game 2.

The second week of the season brought a pair of easy wins for the Bashers, as they dominated Hitfaced by scores of 9-3 and 14-3, beginning what would be a season-long domination by the Basher pitching staff of Chris E and Dave. Combined, they would allow single-digits in 8 of the 16 games the team played.

The following week brought a battle with rival Fighting Penguins. The Bashers dominated game one by a score of 20-8, but fell in game two 16-14. This week saw a change in the field management for the Bashers, as Mark took a leave of absence from the on-field running of the Bashers and handed the reigns over to Kevin.

Kevin got off to a rocky start as the skipper, as the league's top team, Hard Times Cafe, smoked the Bashers 26-18 and 27-12. However, the Bashers turned a corner after that game. The following week, they went out onto that same Virginia Highlands diamond and dominatyed Badabing by scores of 17-3 and 15-5.

After getting two wins over Team Johnnies by way of forfeit, the Bashers continued their hot ways against Hot Action. They won 16-5 and 18-13 as they tried to finish in the top 2. The following week brought more luck, as the Bashers finished their time at Jennie Dean (where they played 4 weeks) with a sweep of Whitlows on Wilson, 12-8 and 14-3.

Going into the final week, the Bashers were not in contention for the league title, but only needed one win to clinch second place. Despite an early lead, the Bashers fell in the opener of the doubleheader to Jay's Saloon, 16-15, on a walk-off double. However, the Bashers had another shot at the brass ring, and did not fail. They won 13-10 in the final game of the season to clinch second place and add another trophy to a rapidly-filling case.

For the season, the Bashers were led offensively by Tommy, who hit a team-best .739 with 3 HRs and 26 RBI while stroking a team-high 6 triples. Ryan not only played great in left-center field, but also led the team in hits (36), runs scored (34) and doubles (15). Chris E continued to put up gaudy power numbers, hitting a team-best 7 HRs and also topping the Bashers with 33 RBI while earning 6 wins to lead the team as well.

For the entire season's stats, click here.

The Bashers had a balance of grizzled veterans and energetic rookies who brought fire to the field each and every week. In only their third season in "C" league, the Bashers proved they continue to belong amongst the top teams in the division. Despite potential roster changes, the team hopes they can be there battling for the title again come Spring 2008.

Bashers Lose Teammate, Friend with Passing of Danny Medina

The Bashers family awoke to shocking news on Monday, when it was learned that P/OF Danny Medina had died of a heart attack the previous Wednesday. Marty's email announcing Danny's passing stunned team members.
In response to Danny's passing, the team immediately decided to retire his #33.
The text of Marty's email follows:
"It is with great sadness that I must report the passing of my best friend Danilo Medina. Last Wednesday night, Danny suffered a heart attack at home and was not able to be revived.

He was not only your teammate and championship pitcher but an amiable extrovert whose affable spirit will be sorely missed to his friends and the community that he touched.

I spoke to Danny about one hour earlier. He asked how the team was doing and was preparing for a show that night, which his band had been preparing for the last several weeks. I saw Danny a couple weeks ago and he looked great. He had a full physical two weeks ago and was found to be in excellent condition. We shared a laugh and he was in his usual jovial mood.

Danny's memorial service will be held this Saturday, September 8th, at the Adams Green funeral home in Herndon, Va at 11am. Everyone is then welcomed to an open house at Danny's as he would wish.

Danny is survived by his wife Natalie, his mother Maria and two brothers, Jamie and Ronald. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Marty"

Bashers Open Fall Season with Split

When the ball settled into Glen’s glove, he knew the throw had to be perfect. He’d just recorded the second out in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the winning run was tagging up at third base. The throw was perfect, and Mark turned to apply the tag that would preserve the tie, and send the Bashers home undefeated for the season, with a 1-0-1 record, not 1-1-0.

It was not to be. The ball came out of Mark’s glove on impact, and the second game of the season ended with the Bashers on the wrong end of an 11-10 result.

It was the end of an evening where the Bashers had shown flashes of the power that was mostly absent last season, and a night when Marty played his last ball of 2007.

The team opened the fall season in all too familiar fashion: after 2.5 innings of play, they trailed the Spartans 9-1. Starting in the bottom of the third inning, though, they turned on the offense, outscoring the Spartans 14-3, to secure a 15-12 victory.

Dave led off the bottom of the third with a single. He was driven home on Dean’s RBI double. Tab followed up with a single of his own, and rode home on Glen’s 3-run jack. Not to be outdone, Chris E put the next pitch out of the park as well. After back to back fly outs by Ryan and Chris J, Marty doubled, and was driven home by Matt’s RBI single.

The bats stayed alive in the next inning. Dave struck out, but Dean singled, and was driven in by Tab’s first home run of the season. Glen tripled, Chris E singled, Ryan doubled, Chris J tripled, and Marty hit a sacrifice fly to end the scoring. Matt capped his 3-3 game with his third single of the night.

Dean and Tab added insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Game two also saw the Bashers spotting a four-run cushion to the Spartans in the first frame. After two, the Spartans’ lead had been cut to 6-4, following Tab’s second HR of the night, a double by Marty and RBI singles by Matt and Chris J.

In the third, the Bashers bats got lively again. Tommy led off with a double, advanced to third on Glen’s flyout, and scored on Ryan’s double. Chris E plated Ryan, and Tab doubled. Marty then sent them both home with a 2-RBI triple, and scored on Matt’s RBI double.

At that point, the Bashers’ offense ground to a halt, sending only seven players to bat over the next two innings. During that time, the Spartans evened the score at 9-9.

In the top of the sixth, Marty reached on an error, and advanced to second on Matt’s final hit of a perfect six for six night. Chris J sacrificed the runners over, and Mark stepped to the plate, dragging an 0-5 performance behind him. This time, the Spartan’s second baseman was unable to field the ball, and Marty scored. Dave and Dean made the final outs of the inning, to set up the bottom of the sixth.

The Bashers return to action next Wednesday at Jenny Dean field vs Hitfaced. First pitch for game one is at 6:30 p.m.

Kevin will update this week’s stats next week.

Bashers Rock Bad News Beers, Sweep Doubleheader

The Bashers and the Bad News Beers have played some epic games in their short, but intense, rivalry. Wednesday night was no exception, as the Bashers bats continued their renaissance to lead the team to a doubleheader sweep, 13-9 and 16-9.

In game one, there was no score through an inning and a half. The Bashers came up in the home half of the second, and promptly sent 11 to the plate. 8 straight reached base with one out, including 7 singles and a walk. Tommy and Mark each had one-run singles, and Kevin and Tab had two-run singles. The Bashers, however, gave back all those runs in the top of the third, and it was 6-6 going into the bottom of the 3rd. The Bashers, though, would put up another half-dozen runs in that inning, capped off with a 3 run home run by Tommy, his fourth of the regular season and the sixth overall in the spring. After giving back three in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 12-9, the Beers could not rally. The Bashers added a final run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Tab to account for the final scoreline.

In game 2, the Bashers again jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The Bashers scored four in the first, but allowed on in the bottom of the first. However, the Bashers put the game out of reach in the visiting second. They sent 11 to the plate, scoring 7 times. The crushing blow was a three-run home run by Glen. The Bashers blanked the Beers in the second, and then added 4 more in the third inning, speaked by a two-run triple by Chris J. With it 15-1, the Bashers let off the gas. They allowed 6 in the home half of the fourth, which made it a 15-9 scoreline. However, the Bashers would get a final run in the visiting fifth on a solo home run by Glen, his 2nd of the night, 6th of the regular season and 11th of the spring.

The win moved the Bashers to 9-4-1, and the two losses dropped the Beers to an even 7-7.

The Bashers are now unbeaten in their last nine, and have won eight in a row. The offense has been the difference, as the Bashers continue their run of double-digit scorelines. Next up for the Bashers is Hot Action, which has not been very hot this season and stood going into last night at 0-12-0. The games will start at 8:30pm at Barcroft.

Bashers Sweep Doubleheader, Extend Streak to 6

As the summer heat has begun to infiltrate the northern Virginia landscape, the Basher bats are starting to finally come out of their own winter hibernation. They swept Jay's Saloon on Wednesday night by scores of 11-6 and 18-6 to extend their winning streak to 6 and remain unbeaten in their last 7, a streak that has seen them score double-digits in each game.

In the opener, the Bashers gave up 3 quick runs in the top of the first. In their own half, however, the Basehrs scored 3 times as well thanks to 5 singles in the inning. The teams would each score twice in the third to make it 5-5. With it 6-5 going into the bottom of the fourth, the Bashers put their mark on the game, scoring 6 times. They were sparked by a 3-run home run by Tommy, his third of the regular season. That would conclude the scoring, as the Bashers went to 6-4-1 with the victory.

Game two was over as a contest before it started. The Bashers sent all 12 to the plate in the top of the first, scoring 8. The first 10 men to the plate reached base, topped by Tab's three-run home run (2nd of regular season) and a 2-run triple by Dave. The Bashers would put up 3 in the top of the second, including the first of Glen's home runs, a two run shot. With 4 in the bottom of the second by Jay's Saloon it was 11-6 Bashers. The Bashers tacked on another run in the 4th, and five more in the top of the 6th, all with 2 outs. The 6th was capped by Glen's second home run of the game (4th of the regular season), this one a three-run shot. Meanwhile, Chris was masterful on the mound, shutting out Jay's Saloon in the final four frames to gain his 7th victory of the season.

The bats were led by Tommy, who was 6 for 7 over the 2 games with 4 extra-base hits and a game-high 6 runs scored. Dean went 5 for 7 with 5 runs scored and 3 doubles, while Tab was 4 for 6 with 7 runs batted in and Glen drove home 6.

All Basher stats are available by clicking here.

The Bashers finished their spring season at Virginia Highlands a perfect 6-0. They will finish the season with 3 straight doubleheaders at Barcroft starting on June 6th at 6:30pm against their arch-rivals, the Bad News Beers. Bashers Sweep That's What She Said, Extend Unbeaten Streak to 5

The Bashers used some late-inning heroics again on Wednesday night to twice rally for victories against That's What She Said (formerly Consolidated Construction) by scores of 13-5 and 16-15.

In the opener, the Bashers used the long ball to good effect, with Chris E, Tommy and Glen all finding the other side of the fence. The Bashers blew open a 5-5 game in the bottom of the fourth. All 11 batters came to the plate, sparked by Tommy and Glen's home runs. Chris E pitched tremendously, allowing only 3 earned runs over 5.

In the nightcap, the Bashers scored 7 in the top of the first, only to see their opponents put up 11 in their frame. However, the Bashers continued to battle. They tied it at 11 in the top of the second, but fell behind 15-11 after 3. A 5-run fourth inning gave the Bashers a 16-15 going into the bottom of the 4th, the last frame. With the tying run on third and the winning run on second and a 3-2 count, Chris delivered a nearly unhittable pitch that tied the batter in knots as he swung and missed.

The Bashers have now won four in a row, and are unbeaten in 5. They are next in action on May 30th at 8pm against Jay's Saloon. The game will be at Virginia Highlands.

Bashers Get First Win of Season, Split with Lollygaggers

The Bashers finally climbed into the win column on Wednesday night as they split the doubleheader with the Lollygaggers. They rallied to win 12-11 in the first game, but fell 12-9 in the second in the first regular-season games that the Bashers have played at newly renovated Barcroft.

Billy Ocean once sung "when the going gets tough, the tough get going." The Bashers proved that again Wednesday night, displaying a never-say-die attitude that brought them the title a year ago. The Bashers trailed for most of the night, pulling even at 6-6 in the bottom of the third before falling behind 11-6 going into the bottom of the seventh. It was then that the Basher bats, which have taken an early season sabbatical, came to life. Tommy, pinch-hitting for Mark, ripped a single, followed by one from Dean. Chris then came up with an RBI single. With two on and no-one out, Tab crushed a home run to left-center, the first Basher home run of the regular season. After a pair of outs, Marty, Tim and Dave all hit consecutive singles to tie the game at 11. Kevin, mired in an early-season slump, was able to drive a ball into right-center to score Tim from second and give the Bashers their inaugural victory of the season.

Unfortunately, the momentum did not carry over to the nightcap of the twin bill. The Bashers trailed throughout the early stages of the game and were down 5-1 after three. The Bashers grabbed the lead twice, once with a 6-run fourth inning sparked by a string of 4 consecutive singles by Marty, Tim, Matt and Dave. After allowing 2 in the bottom of the frame to tie it, the Bashers again took a lead thanks to a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth. However, a 5-run bottom of the fifth left the Bashers staring defeat in the face, and they were unable to mount another late-inning rally and fell 12-9. In the second game, it was defense that hurt the Bashers allowed only two earned runs in the game.

The Basher bats were led by Chris (5-8), Tim (4-6), Dave (4-6) and Tab (3-6, with a double and a home run).

Full season stats are available here.

The Bashers are back in action Wednesday May 2 at 8:30pm at Jennie Dean. They take on Whitlow's on Wilson.

Bashers Bats Remain in Hibernation

The weather for the opening night of the 2007 spring season was more suited for penguins than it was softball. It seems only fitting, then, that the Bashers dropped the opening doubleheader of the season to the Fighting Penguins on a chilly night at Jennie Dean Park by scores of 13-6 and 11-9.

The Bashers' struggles at the plate continued throughout the night as they could not figure out the crafty left-hander on the mound for the Penguins. As a team, the Bashers were only 10-for-25 in the opener. While every man had at least one hit, only new lead-off man Dean managed to get multiple hits in the game. In the second game, the Bashers were stronger at the plate, hitting 15-of-31. However, the Bashers failed to score in three of their six at-bats, which hurt their chances of a second-game rally.

Chris continued to pitch well, allowing 23 total earned runs during the doubleheader. At the plate, Dean led the way with a spectacular 5-of-6 performance, while newcomer Tim was 4-of-5 on the night with a team-high 3 RBIs (tied with Chris). Tab also had a strong game at the plate, going 3-of-4 with a team-high 2 walks. He also scored three times, as did Glen. Matt was brilliant in the field, coming up with several outstanding snags and throws from the hot corner. In addition, the Bashers welcomed back Old Danny, who sat out the Fall 2006 season. While the Bashers were without their normal power numbers and finished the games without a home run, they did manage 5 sacrifice flies.

The Bashers will look to get going in the right direction, in what team meteorologists promise will be warmer conditions, in week two against the Lollygaggers. The game will be played on Wednesday April 25th at 6:30pm at Barcroft Field. For directions, click here.

Bashers Fall in Final of Early Bird Tournament

In their second tournament of the spring, the Bashers rallied from early disappointment to the "B" division final before falling in heartbreaking fashion to rival Bad News Beers. After going 1-2 in the opening round, the Bashers finished third in their group, which put them in the "B" bracket on Saturday.

Saturday started off well for the Bashers, as they won their first two games, despite still rubbing the sleep out of their eyes with the 9am start time. In the winner's bracket final, the Bashers found themselves down to 9 men. However, the heart of the team would not be overcome as they defeated the Bad News Beers with a late-inning rally for a birth in the final.

The two teams would meet again in the championship game. As the skies grayed, so did the Bashers' hopes. They were unable to post a come-from-behind victory and fell, 14-11. In the second championship game the Bashers were unable to compensate for being shorthanded again, and fell 14-2.

The Bashers were led at the plate by Tommy, who made his inaugural 2007 appearance for the club and responded by going 19-for-22, a cool .864 average and a team-high 3 triples while also topping the team with 13 runs scored. Glen was in mid-season form by knocking 4 home runs and driving in a team-high 16. In Saturday's action, Dave pitched for the Bashers and went 3-2 with a 7.60 ERA. For full Basher team stats from the tournament and the entire 2007 season to date, click here.

The Bashers begin their quest for a second successive spring league title on Wednesday April 18 at 6:30pm at Jennie Dean Park against the Fighting Penguins.

Spring 2007 Season Around the Corner

The Bashers have begun their pre-season preparations for the Spring 2007 campaign. The team is considering participation in two pre-season tournaments and at what level and on what night the team will play. Please stay tuned for future Basher updates as they become available.

NEW RULES FOR THE 2007 SEASON

1. Each team will provide its own ball for a game, replacing the "Home team ball" rule of previous seasons.

2. Each team will be allowed to bat 12 players per game, allowing for two designated hitters in the line-up.
